Why this pick
Kusturica’s earlier whirlwind shares Underground’s rambunctious Balkan energy, bittersweet absurdism, crowded musical imagery, and a tragicomic world where private longing is swept into larger forces.
Why this pick
A more playful cousin to Underground: anarchic family schemes, boisterous ensemble comedy, folk-inflected exuberance, and visual chaos that still leaves room for warmth and melancholy.
Why this pick
Its surreal comic set pieces and emotionally unruly characters echo Underground’s taste for dream logic, extravagant music-driven imagery, and sadness hiding beneath carnival-like disorder.
Why this pick
This tightly wound social farce matches Underground’s affection for unruly crowds and comic catastrophe, turning communal celebration into a hilarious, increasingly revealing spectacle.
Why this pick
For Underground’s fusion of national history and theatrical storytelling, this sweeping, formally distinct epic follows performers through upheaval with a similarly mournful sense of collective memory.
