Underground
Why this pick
Kusturica again combines unruly comic invention, music, animals and dreamlike excess, but channels Arizona Dream’s eccentric tenderness into a larger, more feverish tragicomic fable.

Black Cat, White Cat
Why this pick
Its boisterous misfits, explosive family entanglements and carnivalesque visual humour closely match the freewheeling, affectionate absurdity of Arizona Dream.
03
The Science of Sleep
Why this pick
A handmade, unstable border between waking life and fantasy gives this the same gently melancholy, whimsical logic as Axel’s drifting inner world.
04
Time of the Gypsies
Why this pick
A more emotionally intense Kusturica fairy tale, blending magical realism, unruly characters and vivid musical spectacle with deep compassion for its dreamers.
05
The Saddest Music in the World
Why this pick
Its Depression-era melodrama is deliberately artificial, bizarre and surprisingly moving—an off-kilter world where emotional longing and absurd comic imagery coexist.

01 / THE STORY
A little about the film.
Axel (Johnny Depp) has a dream about an Eskimo who catches a rare halibut and brings it back to his family in an igloo. Axel's cousin Paul (Vincent Gallo) coaxes Axel from his job tagging fish in New York City to Arizona to attend his uncle Leo's (Jerry Lewis) trophy wedding to a much younger woman (Paulina Porizkova). His uncle tries to persuade him to stay permanently and take over the family business of selling Cadillacs. Axel resists at first, but he decides to give it a try.
