Why this pick
Like The Wrestler, it finds bruised dignity in a working-class athlete whose body and identity are tied to competition, balancing raw ring intensity with complicated family need.
Why this pick
Its faded performer, modest American settings and unsentimental tenderness closely echo Randy’s late-life struggle to build a self beyond an old public persona.
Why this pick
A physically punishing sports drama with the same intimate, grounded attention to damaged people, financial pressure and the emotional cost of stepping back into the arena.
Why this pick
Its restrained, unsettling realism and lonely wrestler at its center extend the melancholy of The Wrestler, focusing on need, dependency and the vulnerability behind athletic discipline.
Why this pick
For The Wrestler’s willingness to show performance, punishment and self-destruction without glamour: another fierce character study of a fighter unable to leave combat behind.

01 / THE STORY
Robin Ramzinski, better known by his ring name Randy "The Ram" Robinson, is a professional wrestler who became a celebrity in the 1980s. Now past his prime, Randy wrestles on weekends for Independent circuit in New Jersey while working part-time at a supermarket under Wayne, a demeaning manager who mocks Randy's wrestling background. As a regular at a strip club, Randy befriends a stripper named Cassidy, who is older than those usually in her profession. After winning a local match, Randy agrees to a proposed 20th-anniversary rematch with his most notable opponent, "The Ayatollah", which could bring him back to stardom.
