Why this pick
Like Warrior, it makes combat the pressure point for a bruised working-class family, pairing hard-won training and vivid fights with an emotionally messy struggle for self-respect.
Why this pick
A raw, sincerely emotional boxing drama about grief, rage and rebuilding. Its physical intensity serves a personal redemption arc in the same unabashedly heartfelt register as Warrior.
Why this pick
Its battered athlete and estranged daughter give it Warrior’s aching family core. The stripped-back style and punishing physical stakes make every attempt at connection feel earned.
Why this pick
From Warrior’s director, this brings the same compassion for addiction, male vulnerability and second chances to a basketball comeback story, building emotion through patient team dynamics rather than sentimentality.
Why this pick
A stirring underdog sports drama that understands fighting as an inheritance as much as a contest. Its mentor bond and grounded training scenes carry Warrior’s mix of toughness and feeling.

01 / THE STORY
United States Marine Corps Tommy Riordan (Tom Hardy) visits his father, Paddy Conlon (Nick Nolte), a recovering alcoholic who has returned to his Catholic faith. Tommy had to run away from Paddy with his dying mother when he was just a boy due to Paddy having previously been an abusive alcoholic, and has never quite forgiven him. Paddy tries to convince him that he has changed, but to no avail. The next day, Tommy enters a gym where, in less than a minute, he beats unconscious a professional fighter named Pete "Mad Dog" Grimes (Erik Apple), in a fight which is filmed with a cell phone and later uploaded to the internet, where it goes viral video. Tommy learns about a winner-takes-all mixed martial arts tournament called Sparta in which the winner will receive $5 million. Tommy asks Paddy to help him train for the tournament, but only under the condition that Paddy does not try to reconcile their relationship.
