The Wrestler poster 01

Movie / 2008 / Drama

The Wrestler

Why this pick

Like Crazy Heart, it follows a worn-down former star facing bodily decline, regret, and a fragile chance to reconnect. Its intimate, unglamorous realism and deeply compassionate performance give it the same bruised emotional weight.

Tender Mercies poster 02

Movie / 1983 / Drama

Tender Mercies

Why this pick

A quiet, humane country-music redemption story about an alcoholic singer trying to build a life after ruin. Its plainspoken Southwestern setting and patient attention to small acts of grace closely echo Crazy Heart.

Country Strong poster 03

Movie / 2010 / Drama

Country Strong

Why this pick

Another music-world drama centered on addiction, damaged celebrity, and the difficult work of returning to the stage. It is more ensemble-driven, but carries a similarly melancholy, compassionate view of performance and recovery.

Red Rocket poster 04

Movie / 2021 / Comedy / Drama

Red Rocket

Why this pick

A scrappy, sun-bleached portrait of a washed-up performer chasing relevance in American backwaters. Its protagonist is less sympathetic than Bad Blake, but the lived-in locations and bittersweet sense of faded ambition resonate.

Nebraska poster 05

Movie / 2013 / Adventure / Drama

Nebraska

Why this pick

Its deadpan road-movie rhythm, modest towns, and weathered characters find warmth without sentimentality. Though not music-centered, it shares Crazy Heart’s empathy for aging men carrying disappointment and complicated family histories.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

Otis "Bad" Blake is a 57-year-old alcoholic singer-songwriter who was once a country music star. He now earns a modest living by singing and playing his guitar in small town bars across the southwestern United States. Having a history of failed marriages (four that he admits to, although a reference is made to a fifth he does not discuss) Blake is without a family. He has a son, aged 28, with whom he has not had contact in 24 years. He is mostly on the road performing, staying in cheap motels and travelling alone in his 1978 Suburban. The film opens with his arrival at a bowling alley for a show.
