Why this pick
Like The Wings of the Dove, it is a finely observed period tragedy about a clever woman constrained by wealth, reputation, and a merciless social order, rendered with aching restraint.
Why this pick
Its elegant Edwardian surfaces conceal illicit desire and class cruelty, with a poised, melancholy style and the same sense that social rules turn intimacy into catastrophe.
Why this pick
Another exquisitely detailed Edwardian romance in which propriety, class expectations, and genuine feeling collide; it offers the same visual refinement, though with a more hopeful emotional current.
Why this pick
A lush, emotionally controlled portrait of lovers hemmed in by status and convention, where glances, rooms, and rituals carry the force of forbidden declarations.
Why this pick
For the film’s intense, morally complicated romantic triangle: this is similarly sensual and sorrowful, probing love, jealousy, sacrifice, and the unknowability of another person’s motives.

01 / THE STORY
In 1910 London, England, Kate Croy lives under the careful watch of her domineering Aunt Maude. The wealthy Maude has taken the penniless Kate in, intending to marry her to a rich man and save her from the fate which befell her recently deceased mother when she married Kate's own dissolute father, Lionel. Lord Mark, a sophisticated aristocrat with a large estate, begins to court Kate with Maude's approval. However Kate is secretly in love with a young Muckraker Journalism named Merton Densher, whom her aunt has forbidden her from pursuing a relationship with because of his humble circumstances. Nonetheless, she has continued to meet with Merton in secret, though he is growing increasingly impatient for her to leave her aunt and marry him.
