Why this pick
Another exquisitely composed Merchant Ivory drama, balancing Edwardian social rules with a young woman’s emotional awakening and quietly seismic class tensions.
Why this pick
It shares the lush period detail, restrained English manners, and gradual movement from prescribed respectability toward a more authentic life.
Why this pick
For the same ache of desire constrained by ritual: sumptuous turn-of-the-century interiors, unspoken feeling, and a romance shaped by suffocating social expectation.
Why this pick
A visually refined English country-house drama where idyllic summer surfaces conceal adult rules, forbidden attraction, and lasting emotional consequences.
Why this pick
Its elegant Edwardian settings and emotionally intricate relationships similarly turn manners, money, and travel into pressure on intimate choices.

01 / THE STORY
Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) is from an English village in Surrey and is on holiday in Italy with her much older cousin and Chaperone (social), Charlotte Bartlett (Maggie Smith). Charlotte is conventionally English, with an extremely restrictive personality, and she tends to get her way by expressing her emotions to manipulate others. Lucy has been brought up in an upper-middle class but loving and easygoing household, and has fewer inhibitions, which creates strong tension between herself and Charlotte. They are contrasted with the more free-thinking and free-spirited backdrop of Italy.
