Why this pick
Like The Relic, it turns an urban institution and waterfront into a creature-threat arena, balancing investigative urgency, claustrophobic pursuit, and an unusually tactile monster presence.
Why this pick
A grounded city investigation leads into grim, labyrinthine spaces where an evolutionary horror is stalking people; its procedural setup and escalating siege tension closely suit The Relic.
Why this pick
This delivers the same late-1990s creature-feature momentum: a contained location, stranded survivors, practical-feeling gore, and a fast escalation from mystery to all-out survival.
Why this pick
Its isolated scientific setting, body-horror creature effects, and increasingly distrustful group dynamics offer a harsher, more paranoid version of The Relic's enclosed-monster suspense.
Why this pick
Another sleek 1990s horror-thriller in which clues accumulate before a hidden nonhuman threat overtakes a familiar institution, with a brisk pace and ensemble-under-siege energy.

01 / THE STORY
John Whitney, an anthropologist for the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, studies a tribe in South America and drinks a soup made by the tribesmen. Shortly after, Whitney accosts a merchant ship captain, asking him to remove the cargo he had intended to send to Chicago off the ship. Unwilling to delay the ship's departure, the captain refuses and Whitney sneaks aboard. Not finding his cargo, he cries out. Six weeks later, the ship arrives on Lake Michigan with its crew missing. Chicago Police Department homicide detective Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta and his partner, Sgt. Hollingsworth, investigate the ship and find dozens of bodies and severed heads in the bilge.
