Why this pick
Matches The Host’s uneasy blend of family distress, darkly comic behavior, mounting dread, and a rural Korean atmosphere where official explanations feel dangerously insufficient.
Why this pick
Bong’s tense, character-rich procedural shares The Host’s tonal agility: bleak comedy, flawed authorities, ordinary people under pressure, and a persistent sense of national unease.
Why this pick
Like The Host, it makes creature-driven genre cinema feel immediate and politically pointed, balancing grotesque imagery, volatile action, and empathy for people caught in a broken system.
Why this pick
A boldly Korean genre collision with off-kilter humor, escalating paranoia, and real emotional bruises; it has the same willingness as The Host to turn from absurd to unsettling.
Why this pick
Its enclosed monster horror focuses on a frightened community splintering under pressure, echoing The Host’s interest in family bonds and panic rather than creature spectacle alone.

01 / THE STORY
In 2000, an United States Forces Korea pathologist orders his Korean assistant to dump 200 bottles of formaldehyde down a drain leading into the Han River. Over the next several years, there are sightings of a strange amphibious creature in the waterway, and the fish in the river die off. A suicidal man, just before jumping into the river, sees something dark moving in the water.
