Why this pick
A tough South London estate becomes the site of a lean alien siege, combining rough-edged neighborhood perspective, energetic creature action, and unexpectedly sympathetic character growth.
Why this pick
This low-budget sci-fi thriller shares District 9’s grounded texture and escalating unease, beginning with plausible curiosity before pushing its characters into a disorienting institutional nightmare.
Why this pick
Its stylized conspiracy story uses science fiction to interrogate exploitation in a marginalized community, pairing suspicious institutions, lively local character dynamics, and a bold, street-level visual identity.
Why this pick
For District 9’s lived-in alien coexistence, this offers an intimate journey through a militarized, creature-inhabited borderland, favoring naturalistic imagery and uneasy human consequences over polished spectacle.

01 / THE STORY
In 1982, a giant extraterrestrial spaceship arrives and hovers over the South African city of Johannesburg. An investigation team finds over a million malnourished aliens inside, and the South African government relocates them into a camp called District 9. However, over the years it turns into a slum, and locals often complain that the aliens are filthy, ignorant lawbreakers who bleed resources from Johannesburg.
