Why this pick
A fogbound, colour-saturated Hammer period piece with aristocratic cruelty, a family curse and measured old-world dread.
Why this pick
It shares the lush Hammer visual style and a romantic, doomed strain of Gothic horror, balancing formal period melodrama with sudden menace.
Why this pick
Another Terence Fisher tragedy: atmospheric European village settings, sympathetic monstrosity and ornate colour photography create a mournful, fairy-tale Gothic mood.
Why this pick
Its feverish Hammer Gothic tone, decadent rural setting and sexual unease make it a close companion to the adult, tragic horror of Werewolf.
Why this pick
A superb Hammer excursion into 18th-century superstition, rural secrets and macabre pageantry, with the same handsome period texture and creeping menace.

01 / THE STORY
The story is set in 18th century Spain. A beggar is imprisoned by a cruel Marquess after making inappropriate remarks at the nobleman's wedding. The beggar is forgotten, and survives another fifteen years. His sole human contact is with the jailer and his beautiful Muteness daughter (Yvonne Romain). The aging, decrepit Marques makes advances on the jailer's daughter while she is cleaning his room. When she refuses him, the Marques has her thrown into the dungeon with the beggar. The beggar, driven mad by his long confinement, rapes her and then dies.
