Why this pick
A closely related Hammer Gothic: an isolated village, a hereditary curse and mounting dread, rendered with the same richly coloured period atmosphere and sympathetic monster-movie melancholy.
Why this pick
Terence Fisher brings the same polished Hammer command of ritualistic horror, stately pacing and imperilled protagonists confronting an ancient supernatural threat.
Why this pick
Its fogbound rural setting, secretive local authority and graveyard unease echo The Gorgon’s village-bound mystery while sustaining an elegant, old-fashioned Gothic chill.
Why this pick
Another lavish Hammer tragedy from Fisher, balancing a period setting, doomed romance and a monstrous curse with the sombre visual grandeur of The Gorgon.
Why this pick
For its compact British horror craftsmanship and sinister spell of obsession: it trades the mythic castle for Swinging London but retains a tragic, steadily tightening supernatural menace.

01 / THE STORY
The year is 1910. In the rural German village of Vandorf, seven murders have been committed within the past five years, each victim having been petrified into a stone figure. Rather than investigate it, the local authorities dismiss the murders for fear of a local legend having come true. When a local girl becomes the latest victim and her wiktionary:suicided#Adjective lover made the scapegoat, the father of the condemned man decides to investigate and discovers that the cause of the petrifying deaths is Magaera, the very last of the snake-haired Gorgon sisters who haunts the local castle and turns victims to stone during the full moon.
