Like The BFG, it turns Roald Dahl's child-centered imagination into a darkly playful fantasy, balancing genuine menace with a young hero’s resourcefulness and a storybook sense of wonder.
Why this pick
This hand-drawn adaptation preserves the gentle odd-couple bond between Sophie and the Big Friendly Giant, with more of Dahl’s whimsical language and dreamlike, bedtime-story texture.
Why this pick
It shares The BFG’s child-eye view of a hidden magical world, where strange creatures are both enchanting and threatening and courage grows through an unlikely family alliance.

Its towering creature and richly visual fantasy echo The BFG’s blend of fear and comfort, but with a more emotionally intense fable about a child finding strength through imagination.

01 / THE STORY
Sophie, a 10-year-old girl who lives in a London orphanage, stays awake reading through the nights due to her insomnia. At 3 in the morning, or what she calls the "wikt:witching hour", she sees an elderly giant outside her window. The giant captures her and takes her into Giant Country. There, he explains that Sophie must stay with him for the rest of her life because she saw him and must not be allowed to reveal the existence of giants. He also explains that she will put herself at risk if she goes out in the open, as nine other giants inhabit Giant Country, all of whom are man-eaters and favor the taste of children.
