Why this pick
A visually ravishing story in which fantasy and real-world suffering entwine through a child's perspective, with the same tender, melancholy sense that imagination can be both refuge and confrontation.
Why this pick
Its intimate childhood friendship and invented kingdom carry a similar emotional arc: fantasy is treated seriously as a way for a young person to process grief and difficult truths.
Why this pick
Less fantastical in plot but similarly patient and mournful, it uses supernatural imagery with striking visual simplicity to contemplate attachment, loss, and the hard passage of time.
Why this pick
Its handcrafted mythic adventure turns bereavement and family memory into a beautiful, sometimes frightening fable, delivering wonder without softening its emotional weight.
