SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION
01
Why this pick
Another adaptation of Roald Dahl’s witch tale, with the same child-versus-hidden-monsters premise and heightened storybook menace; its slicker, more comic-book visual approach makes it a natural companion rather than a replacement.
02
Why this pick
It shares Roeg’s willingness to make children’s fantasy feel uncanny and emotionally consequential, mixing practical creatures, dark fairytale imagery, and a young protagonist facing a frightening adult-sized threat.
03
Why this pick
For the unsettling, richly stylised fairytale side of The Witches: this is a dreamlike anthology of storybook fears, transformations, and sinister folklore, with a more poetic and mature tone.
04
Why this pick
Its off-kilter children’s logic, grotesque transformation, and matter-of-fact handling of the bizarre echo the peculiar tonal balance that makes Roeg’s film both playful and genuinely unsettling.
05
Why this pick
A warm yet strange children’s fantasy with an emotionally grounded young lead, tactile 1980s effects, and a willingness to let wonder carry an undercurrent of loneliness and unease.
