SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION
01
Why this pick
Its lavishly handmade absurdism, straight-faced eccentric heroes, and episodic leaps through impossible worlds match Buckaroo Banzai’s comic-book confidence and gleeful disregard for normal reality.
02
Why this pick
A cocky, increasingly bewildered protagonist is swept into a colorful hidden-world adventure, with deadpan banter, pulpy mythology, and the same affection for gloriously overstuffed genre collisions.
03
Why this pick
This leaner cult sci-fi ride shares Buckaroo’s alien-invasion paranoia, oddball procedural momentum, and sharply played human-and-not-quite-human partnerships beneath its B-movie surface.
04
Why this pick
It turns a heightened 1980s Los Angeles into an uncanny all-night adventure, balancing offbeat strangers, apocalyptic sci-fi unease, and a committed emotional core without losing its strange energy.
05
Why this pick
A proudly artificial retro-futurist odyssey full of stylized characters, dry wit, and invented-world logic; it has Buckaroo’s sense that every bizarre detail belongs to a much bigger universe.

01 / THE STORY
Buckaroo Banzai and his mentor Dr. Hikita perfect the "oscillation overthruster", a device that allows one to pass through solid matter. Banzai tests it by driving his Jet Car through a mountain. While passing through it, Banzai finds himself in another dimension, and on returning to his normal dimension, he discovers an alien organism has attached itself to his car.
