Why this pick
Gilliam’s earlier fantasy shares Munchausen’s lavishly handmade worlds, irreverent historical imagination, and a childlike delight in stories that collide with authoritarian adult logic.
Why this pick
Its nested tale of an improbable hero turns storytelling into extravagant visual invention, balancing melancholy and comic bravado much like Munchausen’s defense of imagination against cold rationality.
Why this pick
Another Gilliam fable where muddy reality gives way to unruly folklore, grotesque comedy, and elaborate set-piece invention; it has the same affection for theatrical excess and dubious heroes.
Why this pick
A traveling show becomes a portal into shifting fantasy realms, sustaining Munchausen’s love of ramshackle stagecraft, flamboyant characters, and imagination as an act of resistance.
Why this pick
It warmly embraces tall tales whose impossible details reveal emotional truth, with colorful period whimsy and a gently comic tension between skeptical realism and a grand storyteller’s vision.

01 / THE STORY
In an unnamed war-torn European city in the "Age of Enlightenment", amid explosions and gunfire from a large Ottoman Empire army outside the city gates, a fanciful touring stage production of Baron Munchausen's life and adventures is taking place. In a theatre box, the mayor, "The Right Ordinary Horatio Jackson", reinforces the city's commitment to reason by ordering the execution of a soldier who had just accomplished a near-superhuman feat of bravery, claiming that his bravery is demoralizing to other soldiers and citizens.
