Matches Carpenter’s anything-goes fusion of wisecracking heroes, pulpy science fiction, oddball villains, and a densely imagined world delivered with straight-faced comic momentum.
02
Why this pick
A fast, supernatural urban adventure with a glib American lead thrust into mystical peril, balancing fish-out-of-water comedy, martial-arts-inflected action, and 1980s fantasy swagger.
03
Why this pick
Its playful mix of martial-arts mythology, colorful street-level characters, outrageous antagonists, and sincere comic-book energy makes it a particularly compatible 1980s cult ride.
04
Why this pick
Kirk Wong brings Hong Kong-flavored action choreography and elastic comedy to an American crime caper, with escalating chaos and an amiably overwhelmed hero.
05
Why this pick
For the same brash, quotable antihero energy: an ordinary loudmouth battles elaborate supernatural threats in a gleefully stylized adventure that never takes its mythology too solemnly.
