Why this pick
A bruised private investigator navigates a Los Angeles case that grows increasingly tangled, with the same adult unease, hard-bitten wit, and morally cloudy 1970s detective atmosphere as Harper.
Why this pick
Its lonely, stubborn detective is stranded amid affluent Southern California corruption. The relaxed, off-kilter pacing and sunlit cynicism offer a more idiosyncratic cousin to Harper’s world.
Why this pick
Another classic private-eye investigation built around eccentric wealthy clients, dangerous secrets, and Los Angeles ambience, delivered with dry humor and a satisfyingly old-school detective rhythm.
Why this pick
A bruised, wisecracking detective follows a labyrinthine case through a richly stylized criminal underworld. It shares Harper’s mix of melancholy, tough talk, and steadily tightening suspicion.
Why this pick
This character-first detective story finds tenderness and rueful humor inside a modest Los Angeles mystery. Its aging gumshoe and unlikely partnership echo Harper’s weary humanity more than pure action.

01 / THE STORY
Private investigator Lew Harper does not have many friends and has an appointment to sign his divorce papers. One of his friends, mild-mannered Albert Graves,, is one of several attorneys of multi-millionaire Ralph Sampson, who is described as crazy, alcoholic and egotistical. Sampson disappeared after flying from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Sampson is married to the physically disabled but hard-boiled Elaine Sampson. She doesn't like her husband and believes he is off with another woman, which she doesn’t mind, she says she has no intention of divorcing him, she would like to know exactly who he is with but mostly she just wants to be sure her husband is not off squandering his fortune.
