Why this pick
Another Elmore Leonard adaptation, with the same cool, character-led criminal banter and a confident, playful tone that makes danger feel casually funny.
Why this pick
Its terse underworld dialogue, stylish fragmentation, and dryly intimidating lead echo Chili Palmer’s unflappable presence, though with a more melancholy edge.
Why this pick
A fast, funny noir puzzle set amid Hollywood’s artifice, driven by sharp criminal repartee and self-aware genre wit rather than brute-force action.
Why this pick
A patient, dialogue-rich adaptation of Leonard that savors small shifts in allegiance, low-key criminal competence, and characters talking their way through peril.
Why this pick
This brings the same mix of noir complications, Los Angeles show-business absurdity, and breezy chemistry between people who stay funny when situations turn dangerous.

01 / THE STORY
Chili Palmer is a loan shark based in Miami who clashes with mobster Ray "Bones" Barboni over a leather jacket that "Bones" borrowed from Palmer without permission. They have two brief but violent confrontations, the first of which leaves Barboni with a broken nose and the second singes his scalp from a bullet from Chili's gun.
