SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION
01
Why this pick
Its sun-drenched Los Angeles noir, bickering mismatched investigators, escalating absurdity, and tightly engineered crime plot make it the closest companion to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang's wisecracking chaos.
02
Why this pick
Shane Black's script delivers the same gleefully nasty one-liners, escalating conspiracy, and combustible odd-couple chemistry, with a more action-forward, wintry edge.
03
Why this pick
This rueful neo-noir follows a sardonic, washed-up former child sleuth through an increasingly serious case, balancing smart jokes with a surprisingly dark investigative undercurrent.
04
Why this pick
Another Shane Black-scripted noir-action ride: cynical Los Angeles, bruised private-eye energy, vicious comic dialogue, and a partnership that survives chiefly through relentless verbal sparring.
05
Why this pick
Glossy, caustic, and knowingly theatrical, it turns a friendship into a twisty mystery with deliciously unreliable stories and a polished, darkly comic sensibility.

01 / THE STORY
At a Los Angeles party, Harry Lockhart recounts recent events. Fleeing a botched burglary in New York City, Harry's friend is shot, forcing Harry to evade police by ducking into an audition. Harry unintentionally impresses Dabney Shaw with an outburst of remorse Dabney mistakes for method acting; Dabney takes Harry to Los Angeles to screen test for the role of a private investigator. At a Hollywood party, Harry meets Gay Perry, an openly gay private investigator, hired to give Harry on-the-job experience for his role. Party host Harlan Dexter is a retired actor who recently resolved a feud over his wife's inheritance with his long-lost daughter, Veronica. He also encounters his childhood crush Harmony Lane but wakes up in bed with her hostile friend.
