Why this pick
Like Cherry 2000, it turns a worn, near-future America into a lively road through eccentric subcultures, balancing scrappy science fiction, deadpan humour and genuine human connection.
Why this pick
From Cherry 2000's director, this has the same heightened 1980s vision, offbeat romantic urgency and propulsive journey through a stylised, increasingly unstable Los Angeles night.
Why this pick
Its grimy Los Angeles, punk energy and casually bizarre dystopian logic closely suit Cherry 2000's blend of low-budget futurism, black comedy and unpredictable road-movie momentum.
Why this pick
A sharp, knowingly artificial genre world with sardonic social rules and bright late-night style; it shares Cherry 2000's taste for playful, sleazy Americana rather than solemn futurism.
Why this pick
A colourful cult oddity full of deadpan world-building, retro technology and fearless tonal shifts—an excellent match for Cherry 2000's affectionate, handmade strangeness.

01 / THE STORY
In 2017, the United States has fragmented into Apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction wastelands and limited civilized areas. One of the effects of the economic crisis is a decline in manufacturing, and heavy emphasis on recycling aging 20th-century mechanical equipment. Society has become increasingly bureaucratic and hypersexualized, with the declining number of human sexual encounters requiring contracts drawn up by lawyers prior to sexual activity. At the same time, robotic technology has made tremendous developments, and female Android (robot) (more properly, Gynoids) are used as substitutes for wives.
