Why this pick
Like A Farewell to Arms, it turns a young American's wartime experience into an intimate, increasingly devastating romance, balancing lyrical tenderness with the blunt physical cost of World War I.
Why this pick
Its free-flowing, romantic surface gradually acquires the ache and instability of a love story shaped by war, with emotional candour and tragic momentum akin to Borzage's film.
Why this pick
For the same humane, tragic-romantic sensibility, this wartime drama finds enormous emotional force in ordinary people caught inside historical violence, delivered with clarity rather than spectacle.
Why this pick
A ravishingly photographed wartime love story in which separation, chance, and private grief matter as much as combat; its sweeping visual lyricism closely suits the emotional register of A Farewell to Arms.
Why this pick
Its World War I setting, enduring romance, and heightened visual poetry echo the longing at the heart of A Farewell to Arms, while the mystery-driven search gives the grief a different shape.

01 / THE STORY
On the Italian Campaign (World War I) during World War I, Frederic Henry (Gary Cooper), an American serving as an ambulance driver in the Italian Army, delivers some wounded soldiers to a hospital. There he meets his friend, Italian Major Rinaldi (Adolphe Menjou), a doctor. They go out carousing, but are interrupted by a bombing raid. Frederic and English Red Cross nurse Catherine Barkley (Helen Hayes) take shelter in the same place. The somewhat drunk Frederic makes a poor first impression.
