Why this pick
A buoyant French New Wave companion: playful formal freedom, romantic uncertainty, and a love triangle treated with wit, melancholy, and an alert feeling for city life.
Why this pick
Its intimate, liberated attention to desire and dissatisfaction anticipates the emotional volatility beneath Jules and Jim’s breezy surface, with a similarly elegant, modern French sensibility.
Why this pick
For the shifting triangle and bohemian Parisian milieu, this is a more bruising, talk-driven exploration of freedom, jealousy, and the uneasy limits of romantic idealism.
Why this pick
Its sunlit, deceptively casual study of attraction among friends shares Truffaut’s light touch, moral ambiguity, and fascination with people who cannot quite live up to their romantic theories.
Why this pick
A wistful, exquisitely observed portrait of friendship and restless postwar bohemia; it trades Jules and Jim’s exuberance for a deeper ache without losing its period texture.

01 / THE STORY
The film is set before, during, and after the World War I in several different parts of France, Austria, and Germany. Jules (Oskar Werner) is a shy writer from Austria who forges a friendship with the more extroverted Frenchman, Jim (Henri Serre). They share an interest in the world of the arts and the Bohemianism lifestyle. At a slide show, they become entranced with a bust of a goddess and her serene smile and travel to see the ancient statue on an island in the Adriatic Sea.
