Why this pick
A monochrome Baltic folktale with uncanny transformations and rough-hewn village life, balancing supernatural grotesquerie with a lyrical fascination for human longing.
Why this pick
Its spare black-and-white folklore atmosphere and childlike encounter with magic make witchcraft feel melancholy, earthly, and emotionally intimate rather than sensational.
Why this pick
A radical, sensory plunge into female subjectivity and ritualistic horror; its fragmented transformation imagery offers a more experimental counterpart to Stolevski’s bodily empathy.
Why this pick
Though far more flamboyant, this sad, sensual monster fable similarly uses a shapeshifting young woman’s appetite and curiosity to explore desire, violence, and belonging.
