Why this pick
Like November, it turns rural folklore into stark monochrome dream-logic, where magic is matter-of-fact and a young woman’s longing carries a quietly devastating cost.
Why this pick
A wintry Nordic folktale of erotic yearning and transformation, rendered in haunting monochrome landscapes; its beauty and fatalism closely echo November’s myth-soaked rural melancholy.
Why this pick
Its handmade nightmare imagery and shifting fairy-tale logic create the same sense of folklore turned physically strange, with innocent longing gradually darkened by ominous forces.
Why this pick
Its medieval world is brutal, sensual and spiritually unsettled, conveyed through ravishing black-and-white compositions and fragmented, legend-like storytelling rather than conventional realism.
Why this pick
This austere historical nightmare shares November’s mud-and-superstition texture, tragic female desire and oppressive folk belief, though it trades surreal whimsy for severe psychological dread.

In 19th century Estonia, a village is inhabited by personified Black Death, ghost, werewolf and the devil himself. A peasant girl, Liina, longs for a village boy Hans, while Hans longs for a daughter of an aristocrat. Both try to use mythical powers so that their unrequited love could change into requited love. However, the mythical powers don't give them what they wanted and in the end Hans dies before Liina and Hans could get together.
