Why this pick
A baroque Southern-gothic cousin to Baby Jane, built around an imperious aging star, decaying grandeur, psychological unease, and exquisitely theatrical cruelty.
Why this pick
Its blackly comic family warfare and Bette Davis’s magnificent tyrant offer the same pleasure in monstrous performance, bitter intimacy, and escalating humiliation.
Why this pick
A harsh, actor-centered chamber piece about a fading performer whose private life turns controlling and cruel; it shares Baby Jane’s acidic show-business melancholy.
Why this pick
Bette Davis brings a similarly unsettling precision to this claustrophobic household thriller, where dependence, resentment, and uncertain memory steadily poison the atmosphere.
Why this pick
For the destabilizing psychological side of Baby Jane: an isolated woman, a beautifully ominous setting, and a subjective nightmare atmosphere that keeps certainties precarious.

01 / THE STORY
In 1917, Baby Jane Hudson is a well-known Vaudeville child actor while her older sister Blanche lives in her shadow. By 1935, their fortunes have reversed: Blanche is a successful film actress and Jane lives in obscurity, her films having failed. One night, Jane, able to imitate Blanche's voice perfectly, mocks her at a party. That same night, Blanche is paralyzed from the waist down in a mysterious car accident that is unofficially blamed on Jane, who is found three days later in a drunken stupor.
