Why this pick
Like Walkabout, it turns the Australian landscape into an uncanny, sensual force, observing young people with elliptical storytelling and a haunting sense of cultural dislocation.
Why this pick
Its dreamlike Australian imagery, fractured perception and growing awareness of an older world beneath modern life echo Walkabout’s unsettling collision of cultures and environments.
Why this pick
Malick’s luminous images, sparse dialogue and childlike-yet-disturbing point of view make this an equally poetic road into violence, innocence and estrangement.
Why this pick
A visually immersive encounter between cultures, told through nature, gesture and shifting subjective impressions rather than conventional plot mechanics.
Why this pick
Its elemental wilderness and hypnotic, hallucinatory momentum offer a harsher adult counterpart to Walkabout’s sense of humans becoming lost within an indifferent landscape.

01 / THE STORY
In November, a white, city-bred teenaged schoolgirl and her much-younger brother become stranded in the wilderness after their father goes berserk. After driving them far into the Australian outback, ostensibly for a picnic, the father suddenly begins shooting at the children. They run behind rocks for cover, whereupon he sets the car on fire and suicide. The girl conceals what has happened from her brother and, after grabbing some food and supplies, the pair head out into the desert.
