Why this pick
Its identity-switching premise shares Captain Kuhio’s pleasure in performance and self-invention, while keeping the humour dry, character-led, and increasingly fond of its flawed schemers.
Why this pick
A gently absurd urban odyssey with the same unhurried, deadpan Japanese comic sensibility and compassion for people who construct slightly ridiculous lives.
Why this pick
Its playful construction and offbeat confidence suit the film’s taste for eccentric characters, improbable claims, and comedy that gradually reveals unexpected human stakes.
Why this pick
This has a similarly whimsical, knowingly artificial comic world, treating oddball schemes and dubious personalities with buoyancy rather than broad farce.
Why this pick
A warm, low-key comedy about lovable misfits whose grand self-images exceed reality; it matches Captain Kuhio’s affection for comic delusion and awkward sincerity.

01 / THE STORY
Set in the early 1990's, after The Persian Gulf War began, a 30 year old man passes himself off as Captain Kuhio a pilot for an American Special Unit. He also boasts that he is the offspring of Kamehameha I (the first King of Hawaii) and a distant relative of Queen Elizabeth of England. In actuality, the man is a marriage swindler looking for his next big score.
