Why this pick
Its seemingly casual Tokyo encounters and dry comic misunderstandings gradually lock into an elegantly constructed, humane chain of coincidence—an excellent fit for Adrift in Tokyo’s offbeat, companionable drift.
Why this pick
Shares the gentle deadpan humor, affection for aimless outsiders, and unhurried warmth of Adrift in Tokyo, finding comedy in small disasters and unexpected friendship rather than big punchlines.
Why this pick
From the same director, this has similarly whimsical comic timing, eccentric urban characters, and a loose, buoyant journey toward emotional renewal without sacrificing the strange everyday texture.
Why this pick
Satoshi Miki’s playful, deadpan view of ordinary life turns suburban routine into quietly absurd adventure, echoing Adrift in Tokyo’s delight in digressions, oddballs, and understated feeling.
Why this pick
Though set far from Tokyo, its relaxed rhythm, deadpan observations, and tender portrait of mismatched men bonding through mundane routines closely match the original’s gentle odd-couple appeal.

01 / THE STORY
Leading a lazy life, Fumiya has been a student for 8 years and owes money to loan sharks. One day, a man named Fukuhara comes to collect the loan, which Fumiya cannot pay. So Fukuhara makes a proposition: He will cancel the debt as long as Fumiya agrees to walk with him across Tokyo to the police station of Kasumigaseki, where he intends to turn himself in for a crime he deeply regrets. Not having much choice, Fumiya accepts the deal. Thus begins their journey. Based on the original novel by the 125th Naoki Prize winner Yoshinaga Fujita.
