SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION
01
Why this pick
Like The Virgin Psychics, it treats adolescent libido and superpowers as fuel for gleefully deadpan, live-action manga absurdity, with an earnest hero at the center of escalating nonsense.
02
Why this pick
Its futuristic Japan, body-mutating villains, candy-colored gore, and outrageous comic invention match Sion Sono’s taste for pushing genre premises into delirious excess.
03
Why this pick
For the same knowingly ridiculous commitment, this turns an absurd premise into energetic action-comedy, mixing gross-out effects, playful genre parody, and total sincerity.
04
Why this pick
Another Sion Sono fantasy-comedy, it pairs an awkward outsider with wildly surreal escalation and colorful pop spectacle, while retaining more sweetness beneath the bizarre premise.
05
Why this pick
Its aggressively stylized visuals, eccentric youth culture, cartoonish digressions, and odd-couple momentum offer a similarly exuberant Japanese pop-surrealist rush.
