Why this pick
A restless film-within-film whose backstage drift, international cast, and shifting boundary between performance and private life echo the melancholy self-awareness of The State of Things.
Why this pick
It shares the pleasure of watching a fragile independent production come apart, balancing deadpan production mishaps with affection for the exhausted people trying to make images together.
Why this pick
Another movie steeped in the practical and emotional rhythms of a film set, but with a warmer, more graceful view of the compromises and small devotions behind filmmaking.
Why this pick
Its spare, searching form and porous line between lived experience and cinematic reenactment should suit an interest in films that quietly interrogate why people need movies.

A film crew in Portugal shoots a black-and-white science fiction film about the survivors on a Apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction Earth, titled ''The Survivors''. The shooting stops when the production runs out of film stock and money. In an abandoned hotel, the crew waits for money to arrive or a sign from vanished producer Gordon. As they grow restless and bored, the film depicts some of their philosophical thoughts and emotional reactions. Director Friedrich Munro finally sets off to find Gordon in Los Angeles who hides in a mobile home because of money he owes to the American Mafia.
