Why this pick
Like The Square, this is a tightly wound neo-noir where an illicit relationship and a desperate scheme spiral into dread, bad decisions, and brutally precise suspense.
Why this pick
Its sun-bleached Australian setting, compromised loyalties, and quietly escalating menace closely match The Square's grounded criminal tension and moral claustrophobia.
Why this pick
An ordinary man's hope for escape turns into a chain of increasingly punishing choices, with the same sober, character-driven pressure and sense of irreversible fallout.
Why this pick
A sharp, adult neo-noir driven by sexual manipulation, money, and competing self-interest; it shares The Square's pleasure in watching plans become dangerous liabilities.
Why this pick
Another restrained Australian crime thriller, built around uneasy conversations, procedural realism, and an oppressive atmosphere rather than action-heavy spectacle.

01 / THE STORY
Raymond Yale (David Roberts (Australian actor)) and Carla Smith (Claire van der Boom) are lovers in a small Australian town living across the river from one another. However, both are already married; Raymond to a loveless wife and Carla to a domineering petty gangster Greg "Smithy" Smith (Anthony Hayes (actor)). Ray and Carla plan to leave their respective spouses and run away together, although Ray insists that they delay until he has enough money to ensure a new life together. As a foreman overseeing the construction of a new leisure resort for property developer Gil Hubbard (Bill Hunter (actor)), Ray has been doing underhanded deals with construction worker Barney (Kieran Darcy-Smith) for the hefty kick-backs which he hopes will eventually land him enough to run off with Carla.
