Why this pick
Its meticulous surveillance perspective and lonely urban soundscape build the same era-specific dread that a hidden system is always operating just beyond the protagonist’s grasp.
Why this pick
A political killing, recorded evidence, and an investigator isolated by official indifference make this a tense, propulsive companion to Pakula’s paranoid thriller.
Why this pick
Pakula applies the same cool, procedural visual control and institutional suspicion, but grounds it in dogged reporting rather than a lone man’s increasingly dangerous investigation.
Why this pick
Its assassination politics, disorienting clues, and nightmare sense of manipulated power anticipate the unnerving conspiracy machinery that defines The Parallax View.
Why this pick
Journalists uncovering a suppressed threat gives it a similarly credible, stripped-down 1970s anxiety, where institutions protect themselves and evidence becomes perilous.

01 / THE STORY
TV newswoman Lee Carter witnesses the assassination of presidential candidate Charles Carroll atop Seattle's Space Needle. A waiter armed with a revolver is pursued and falls to his death while a second waiter, also armed, leaves the scene unnoticed. A Select or special committee decides that the killing was the work of the dead waiter but conspiracy theories subsequently arise. Three years later, Carter visits her former boyfriend and colleague, newspaper reporter Joe Frady, claiming that others must have been behind the assassination as six of the witnesses to the killing have since died and she fears she will be next. Frady does not take her seriously. Carter is soon found dead in what is officially ruled as a simple drug overdose.
