Why this pick
Like The Manchurian Candidate, it turns Cold War political anxiety into taut, increasingly claustrophobic suspense, with principled figures navigating a threat embedded inside the American power structure.
Why this pick
Its cool, paranoid visual design and lone investigator’s pursuit of an elusive political conspiracy closely echo the disorienting institutional dread of The Manchurian Candidate.
Why this pick
This is a more sardonic, working-class espionage nightmare, but its brainwashing fears, uneasy psychology, and stylized 1960s Cold War atmosphere make it a natural companion.
Why this pick
Costa-Gavras brings the same urgent political menace and distrust of official narratives, using brisk procedural momentum to show power closing ranks after a public crime.
Why this pick
For the film’s psychological unease and sense of invisible manipulation, this intimate surveillance thriller offers similarly precise sound-and-image craft and a devastatingly isolated protagonist.

01 / THE STORY
During the Korean War, the Soviet Union and Chinese capture a U.S. Army platoon and take it to Manchuria in People's Republic of China. Three days later, Staff Sergeant Raymond Shaw and Captain (OF-2) Bennett Marco manage to return to United Nations Command. Upon recommendation of the platoon's commander, Captain Marco, Shaw is awarded the Medal of Honor for saving their lives in combat. Shaw returns to the United States to a hero's welcome where he is exploited by his mother, Mrs. Eleanor Iselin, on behalf of the political career of her husband and Shaw's stepfather, United States Senator John Yerkes Iselin. When asked to describe him, Marco and the other soldiers automatically respond, "Raymond Shaw is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.", even though Shaw is a cold, sad, unsympathetic loner.
