Why this pick
Its meticulously artificial retro look, erotic psychodrama, and richly designed feminine world echo The Love Witch’s commitment to stylization over realism.
Why this pick
Anna Biller’s earlier feature shares the same handmade period pastiche, saturated color, arch performances, and playful critique of sexual fantasy.
Why this pick
A candy-colored, female-centered horror musical with seduction, dark humor, and an unapologetically heightened fairy-tale sensibility.
Why this pick
Its ornate Gothic interiors, poisonously jealous heroine, and dreamlike visual excess make it a strong match for Biller’s lush feminine horror aesthetic.
Why this pick
Its theatrical femininity, mischievous satire, vivid color design, and gleeful rejection of conventional behavior complement The Love Witch’s campy feminist bite.

01 / THE STORY
The film opens with Elaine, a beautiful young Witchcraft, driving to Arcata, California, to start a new life after the death of her husband Jerry. It is heavily implied that Elaine murdered him. Once there she rents a room in a Victorian architecture home owned by Elaine's mentor Barbara and kept up by its interior decorator, Trish Manning. In an attempt to befriend the young woman, Trish takes Elaine to a teahouse, where she is met by her husband Richard, who is instantly besotted with Elaine after meeting her gaze. Hoping to find a new lover, Elaine performs a ritual to find a new man and soon meets Wayne, a literature professor at the local college.
