Why this pick

Davies’s earlier Liverpool memory-film shares the intimate family rituals, Catholic atmosphere, popular-song tapestry and emotionally subjective fragments that make childhood feel both comforting and bruised.

The Spirit of the Beehive

Why this pick

A child’s imagination absorbs cinema and transforms a constrained postwar world into something mysterious, tender and quietly haunting, with the same reverent attention to memory and small sensations.

Mirror

Why this pick

Its lyrical, non-linear recollections use sound, landscape, dreams and domestic detail to make memory tactile. Like Davies, it privileges emotional association over conventional plot.

Vampyr poster 04

Movie / 1932 / Fantasy / Horror

Vampyr

Why this pick

Ozu observes childhood embarrassment and family devotion with extraordinary gentleness. Its child-centred perspective finds deep feeling in everyday home life rather than dramatic incident.

Closet Land poster 05

Movie / 1991 / Drama / Thriller

Closet Land

Why this pick

Another exquisitely detailed recreation of a young person’s postwar inner life, where school, family, music and cinema shape identity. It is more expansive and darker, but similarly immersive and compassionate.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

The film is set in Liverpool in the mid-1950s. The story concerns 11-year-old Bud and his loving mother and siblings. He lives a life rich in imagination, centred on family relationships, church, and the struggles of a shy boy at school. Music and snatches of movie dialogue allow him to enrich his narrow physical environment. "Together these fragments", wrote Stephen Holden in the ''New York Times'', "evoke a postwar England starved for beauty, fantasy and a place to escape."
