SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION
01
Why this pick
Like The Ice Pirates, it turns scrappy space adventure into broad, knowingly ridiculous comedy, with a fast-moving quest, bargain-bin futurism, and cheerful irreverence toward science-fiction conventions.
02
Why this pick
It shares the affectionate, comic dismantling of space-opera clichés, pairing an escalating rescue adventure with an ensemble of capable-but-bumbling heroes and an upbeat, playful tone.
03
Why this pick
Another eccentric 1980s sci-fi collage: deadpan absurdity, ramshackle heroes, strange alien politics, and a gleefully overstuffed universe that treats its wildest ideas as perfectly normal.
04
Why this pick
Its low-budget cosmic setting and dry absurdism make a strong match for Ice Pirates’ scruffy charm, finding comedy in bored spacefarers facing increasingly ludicrous futuristic problems.
05
Why this pick
For the same offbeat 1980s genre spirit, this brings a resourceful outsider, inventive low-fi science fiction, and social satire delivered with warmth rather than solemnity.

01 / THE STORY
The film takes place in a distant future where water is so scarce and rationed that it is considered an immensely valuable substance, both as a commodity and as a currency in ice cubes. The Templars of Mithra control the water and they destroy worlds that have natural water, leaving the galaxy virtually dry. Pirates dedicate their lives to raiding ships and looting the ice from the cargo holds to make a living.
