Why this pick
A refined haunted-house mystery with melancholy, restrained apparitions, and an emphasis on a house’s tragic past—an earlier, more romantic companion to The Haunting.

Its hushed mansion, isolation, and precise sound-and-shadow craft sustain the same slow, uneasy uncertainty between psychological distress and haunting.

Crain's daughter Abigail lived in the house for the rest of her life, never moving out of the Nursery (room). She died calling for her nurse-companion. The companion inherited the house, but later Suicide from a spiral staircase in the library. Hill House was eventually inherited by a Mrs. Sanderson, although it has stood empty for some time.
