Movie / 1953 / Comedy

The Titfield Thunderbolt

Why this pick

Like The Happy Family, it finds warm, gently anarchic comedy in ordinary Britons defending their way of life against disruptive modern development, with an affectionate ensemble and a distinctly early-1950s British texture.

The Lavender Hill Mob poster 02

Movie / 1951 / Comedy / Crime

The Lavender Hill Mob

Its modest working-class milieu, dry British wit, and escalating mischief echo the affectionate, lightly satirical spirit behind The Happy Family.

The Man in the White Suit poster 03

Movie / 1951 / Comedy / Drama

The Man in the White Suit

Why this pick

Another sharp but playful Ealing-era clash between innovation and established livelihoods, balancing social observation with farcical pressure and a very British sense of compromise.

Hobson's Choice poster 04

Movie / 1954 / Comedy / Drama

Hobson's Choice

Why this pick

A richly observed family-business comedy where domestic loyalties, generational friction, and practical resilience matter as much as the jokes.

The Belles of St. Trinian's

Why this pick

For a more unruly version of its comic spirit: an ensemble of determined eccentrics turns respectable institutions upside down with brisk, mischievous British humour.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

The House of Lords is a grocery shop that sits on the South Bank of the river Thames close to the site of Royal Festival Hall which is noisily under construction. It is owned by the Lord family, a husband and wife with several children. Lillian Lord runs the shop, while Henry is a British Railways train driver, who has worked on the railways for over 30 years and who is just about to retire. He is looking forward to enjoying a quiet retirement at the family shop looking after his pet hare, Winston, though his spiritualist sister in law Ada has had supernatural visions of "men in black" bringing discord.
