The Ladykillers

Why this pick

Like Hobson’s Choice, this is a sharply observed British comedy built around formidable character performances, class comedy, and a deliciously controlled collision between ordinary domestic life and larger-than-life schemers.

The Man in the White Suit

Movie / 1954 / Comedy

The Belles of St. Trinian's

Why this pick

The Titfield Thunderbolt poster 04

Movie / 1953 / Comedy

The Titfield Thunderbolt

Why this pick

A warmly crafted Ealing comedy about a local community pushing back against authority, with the same blend of gently absurd conflict, period charm, and humane humour.

The Matchmaker

Why this pick

This character-led comedy likewise makes courtship a contest of will, giving its independent heroine and entrenched patriarch ample room for verbal sparring and satisfying reversals.

01 / THE STORY

A little about the film.

Willie Mossop (John Mills) is a gifted but unappreciated bootmaker employed by the tyrannical Henry Horatio Hobson (Charles Laughton) in his moderately upmarket shop in 1880s Salford, Greater Manchester in Lancashire. Hard-drinking widower Hobson has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) and her younger sisters Alice (Daphne Anderson) and Vicky (Prunella Scales) have worked in their father's establishment without wages and are eager to be married and free of the shop. Alice has been seeing Albert Prosser (Richard Wattis), a young up-and-coming solicitor, while Vicky prefers Freddy Beenstock (Derek Blomfield), the son of a respectable corn merchant. Hobson does not object to losing Alice and Vicky, but Maggie is far too useful to part with. To his friends, he mocks the plain, severe Maggie as a spinster "a bit on the ripe side" at 30 years of age.
