Arctic
Why this pick
Its spare, punishing survival journey shares The Grey’s icy isolation and stoic emotional weight, trusting physical detail and a nearly wordless performance over spectacle.
03
All Is Lost
Why this pick
It replaces snow and wolves with open water, but preserves The Grey’s stripped-down tension: one isolated man confronting exhaustion, mortality, and an indifferent environment.
04
The Way Back
Why this pick
This long, harsh escape across extreme terrain echoes The Grey’s physical attrition and solemn camaraderie, finding humanity in small acts of persistence rather than triumphal heroics.
05
Hold the Dark
Why this pick
For The Grey’s Alaskan chill and wolf-haunted dread, this is a colder, more enigmatic descent into grief, violence, and hostile landscapes.

01 / THE STORY
A little about the film.
John Ottway works in Alaska as a marksman for an undisclosed oil company, killing grey wolves that threaten the drillers. On his last day on the job, he sees a driller being pursued by a wolf and shoots it. He then watches and listens as the wolf takes a final breath ending in a long deep exhale. That evening, Ottway writes a letter "without purpose" to his wife, Ana, explaining his plans to commit suicide. He hears a distant wolf howl and doesn't follow through.
