Why this pick
Its rough hybrid of fiction and concert documentary, featuring the Clash amid late-1970s Britain, carries a similarly scrappy, confrontational punk immediacy and distrust of official narratives.
Why this pick
A ferocious punk-era satire with fractured episodes, anarchic performances and deliberately abrasive style; it shares the Swindle’s taste for provocation, spectacle and cultural sabotage.
Why this pick
Its deadpan punk energy, disreputable characters and gleefully unstable plot turn social decay into a fast, funny, defiantly low-budget fever dream.
Why this pick
For the raw documentary counterpart: an intimate, unvarnished plunge into Los Angeles punk that preserves the scene’s aggression, absurdity and combustible live energy.
Why this pick
Its unreliable, self-mocking music-history storytelling and direct-to-camera mischief offer a more polished but comparably irreverent challenge to rock mythology.

01 / THE STORY
Guitarist Steve Jones (musician) plays a shady private detective who - through a series of set piece acts - uncovers the truth about the band. Drummer Paul Cook and bass guitarist Sid Vicious play smaller roles, and the band's manager, Malcolm McLaren, is featured as "The Embezzler", the man who manipulates the Sex Pistols. Fugitive train robber Ronnie Biggs, performer Edward Tudor-Pole, sex film star Mary Millington, and actresses Irene Handl and Liz Fraser also make appearances. Singer and frontman Johnny Rotten refused to have anything to do with the film, stating that it was "a pile of rubbish" and "Malcolm's vision of what he believed and not true in any form."
