Why this pick
For Tony Wilson’s larger-than-life, unreliable-guide energy: a sharply funny British period portrait driven by ego, direct address and a charismatic man trying to impose his vision on a regional institution.
Why this pick
This inventive Sex Pistols documentary shares the anarchic music-history charge and playful collision of archive, mythmaking and cultural upheaval that make 24 Hour Party People feel so alive.
Why this pick
Its deadpan mock-documentary form, affectionate satire of music-scene mythology and beautifully observed performers make it a strong match for the comic self-awareness behind Winterbottom’s film.
Why this pick
Another scrappy club-at-the-centre-of-a-movement story, following a scene builder amid punk’s volatile personalities; it offers the same pleasure in watching local chaos become music history.
