Why this pick
Like The Damned United, it makes sport a stage for ego, institutional resistance and an outsider’s uncompromising methods, with dry humour and unusually sharp attention to professional relationships.
Why this pick
Its suspense comes from a fiercely competitive psychological duel rather than action, matching The Damned United’s pleasure in watching ambitious men test one another in public and private.
Why this pick
This is another precise, wry British portrait of leadership under scrutiny, balancing public performance, stubbornness and intimate professional disagreement without losing emotional restraint.
Why this pick
It shares the cool, unsettling focus on sport’s power structures and damaged male alliances, though with a far darker and more deliberately uncomfortable emotional register.
Why this pick
A caustic sports-world drama about club politics, ambition and clashing personalities; its ensemble friction and unsentimental view of professional competition align closely with The Damned United.

01 / THE STORY
After failing to qualify for the 1974 FIFA World Cup, England manager Alf Ramsey is replaced by Don Revie (Colm Meaney), the highly successful manager of Leeds United A.F.C.. Revie's replacement at Leeds is Brian Clough (Michael Sheen), the former manager of Derby County F.C. and a fierce critic of Leeds because of their violent and physical style of play under Revie's management. Furthermore, Clough's longtime assistant, Peter Taylor (footballer born 1928) (Timothy Spall), has not joined him.
