Why this pick
Its haunted-house setup mixes rowdy supernatural comedy, grisly scares, and a surprisingly warm oddball ensemble—the same tonal dexterity that makes The Frighteners such buoyant horror.
Why this pick
A dry, off-kilter small-town undead comedy with deadpan humor and a knowingly artificial atmosphere; it shares The Frighteners’ affection for genre silliness without losing its eerie mood.
Why this pick
For Peter Jackson’s taste for elaborate practical-looking effects and gleefully macabre humor, this brisk supernatural satire delivers escalating grotesque set pieces with polished Hollywood craft.
Why this pick
Its afterlife bureaucracy, mischievous spirits, and cartoon-gothic production design closely align with The Frighteners’ funhouse approach to ghosts and affectionate monster-movie energy.
Why this pick
Though not ghost-focused, it has the same amiable, splattery collision of horror mechanics and broad comedy, driven by likable outsiders caught in increasingly absurd danger.

01 / THE STORY
In 1990, architect Frank Bannister's wife, Debra, dies in a car accident. He abandons his profession and his unfinished "dream house" sits incomplete. Following the accident, Frank gained the power to see ghosts and befriends three: 1970s street gangster Cyrus, 1950s nerd Stuart, and The Judge, a Gunfighter from American frontier. The ghosts haunt houses so Frank can then "exorcism" them for a fee. Most locals consider him a Confidence trick.
