SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION
01
Why this pick
Its quietly devastating focus on children left to construct their own fragile domestic order echoes The Cement Garden’s enclosed sibling world, with patient observation making the emotional neglect feel increasingly unbearable.
02
Why this pick
A raw, austere study of a family poisoned by what cannot be spoken. Its wintry rural setting, adolescent perspective, and accumulating dread suit The Cement Garden’s disturbing intimacy.
03
Why this pick
Like The Cement Garden, it filters adult decay, sexuality, and death through a young person’s confused gaze. Its sun-bleached imagery makes childhood feel isolated, dangerous, and strangely unreal.
04
Why this pick
Lynne Ramsay’s sensory, unsentimental portrait of a boy amid grief and deprivation shares the earlier film’s oppressive domestic atmosphere and its ability to find unease in neglected spaces.
05
Why this pick
This restrained, haunting child’s-eye family drama similarly turns bereavement and emotional abandonment into an ambiguous private world, balancing cool visual precision with deeply unsettling feeling.

01 / THE STORY
Jack is a narcissistic 15-year-old boy, helping his father, a smoker with a persistent cough, unload large bags of cement to resurface the garden path of their post-war era Prefabrication house. Despite being told to come straight home from school to help with the work the next day, Jack stops by the remains of a torn-down prefab to smoke a cigarette and read a pornographic magazine he has hidden there. When he comes home, he excuses himself to go to the toilet, where he proceeds to masturbate. His father collapses from a heart attack and dies.
