SIMILAR PICKS / A PERSONAL CONNECTION
01
Why this pick
Its sharp, self-aware romantic-comedy mechanics and emotionally guarded leads echo The Baxter’s affection for flawed people trying to escape the roles love stories assign them.
02
Why this pick
Michael Showalter brings the same character-first comic sensibility to an awkward, heartfelt romance, balancing dry observations about dating with genuine emotional stakes.
03
Why this pick
Like The Baxter, it finds humor in romantic insecurity and imperfect timing, but grounds its comedy in an unusually candid, humane portrait of a messy connection.
04
Why this pick
Its observant, deadpan humor and tender treatment of a protagonist overlooked in her own professional and romantic life make it a strong match for The Baxter’s underdog charm.
05
Why this pick
This literate New York romantic comedy shares The Baxter’s interest in social scripts, dating anxieties, and people discovering that their carefully managed expectations are unhelpful.

01 / THE STORY
Elliot (Michael Showalter), a tax accountant from Brooklyn, is a dependable though thoroughly average young man doomed to be the "Baxter", the nice guy who's bound to lose the girl to the leading man in romantic comedy. Losing three girlfriends to last-minute rekindled relationships with their ex-boyfriends has made Elliot wary of being abandoned yet again.
