Mad God
Why this pick
Like The Backwater Gospel, it finds beauty in grotesquerie: painstaking stop-motion, a decayed spiritual nightmare, and near-wordless visual storytelling that makes every detail feel cursed.
03
The Wolf House
Why this pick
Its unstable stop-motion forms and isolated, cult-like atmosphere create an unnerving fable. The handmade imagery becomes increasingly oppressive without relying on conventional scares.
04
The Spine of Night
Why this pick
A grim, adult animated fantasy with rotoscoped texture, fatalistic violence and occult menace. Its anthology-like legends share the short’s interest in folklore, corruption and doom.
05
November
Why this pick
This black-and-white folk-horror tale has the same deadpan macabre spirit: a superstitious rural community, religious unease, and stylised imagery that feels like a moving engraving.
