02
The Ornithologist
Why this pick
Its isolated river-and-woods setting, explicit queer encounters, and enigmatic shifts between sensuality, threat, and spiritual strangeness echo Guiraudie’s unnerving natural-world cinema.
03
Sauvage / Wild
Why this pick
A raw, intimate portrait of a young gay sex worker, it shares the unvarnished physicality and patient observational approach of Stranger by the Lake while pursuing a more vulnerable emotional register.
04
BPM (Beats per Minute)
Why this pick
Though more openly political and communal, it shares an unsentimental, erotically alive view of gay life and lets attraction, grief, and uncertainty develop with patient emotional force.
05
Querelle
Why this pick
This deliberately theatrical port-side nightmare similarly binds male desire to betrayal and violence, trading Guiraudie’s sunlit realism for saturated, claustrophobic artifice.

01 / THE STORY
A little about the film.
Franck (Pierre Deladonchamps) is a regular visitor to a nude beach and the woods surrounding it, both of which are a popular Cruising for sex destination for gay men. He befriends Henri (Patrick d'Assumçao), an older man who seeks solitude at the beach after breaking up with his girlfriend, and Michel (Christophe Paou), a handsome man to whom Franck is instantly attracted.
